I was saddened to hear this wonderful man Greg Dening has died.
His words and approach to history were an inspiration.I found a quote of his that is on my journal cover that embodies all I believe to be true for me at the moment in my life journey
"From a beach things loom.It is possible to see beyond one's horizons
Beaches breed expansiveness. My beaches do anything"
Such powerful words to live by.How would you write about this quote?

For me beaches mean peace, tranquility, possibility, infinity, openness. In a less metaphorical sense, they mean fun, walks, swimming, coolness, soft white sand, the sound of the waves. Having grown up inland from the coast, I love beaches. I too loved Greg Dening! He spoke of the liminal space, a sense of betweenness that beaches own... there is always the possibility of 'the other side'. Thanks for sharing on your blog Thora. Your work is so inspiring.
Ah! finally a comment on this post and from the one who introduced me to this man's wisdom.I hope there is a little bit of beaches for you today that will brighten your day.
I did find a 'beach' yesterday. A river beach not a sea beach, but still it set me thinking and reflecting. It is still a liminal space and marked a boundary. Life has many boundaries, boundaries between our past and present, between our present and future, boundaries between what we feel we can accomplish and that seemingly insurmountable boundary between what we think we can do and what the real possibilities are for us.(that which we think we cannot do) How I wish I could cross this beach and connect with my potential, free from the fear that holds me back, afraid to test the water...I may drown, will it be too cold, too deep, too fast-flowing, or what? Beaches- a powerful image....The beach I visited yesterday is opposite the site where two good friends did actually drown 35 years ago. I wonder what their lives would have held if they had lived to move beyond the beach... or maybe they did cross the beach in a different way....Lots of thoughts...Rosemary and Grace. Rest in peace!
